MARINE DRIVE -- QUEEN'S NECKLACE

Marine Drive is a well laid-out boulevard in Mumbai coast. It is a 'C'-shaped six lane concrete road which stretches to around 3 km along the coastline of Arabian Sea, This beautiful avenue starts at Nariman Point and ends at Malabar Hills, which is known as Beverley Hills of India.

During night when the buildings are lit and streets illuminated, this place looks like a huge diamond studded necklace sparkling in the light That is the reason why this place is termed as “Queens Necklace”. Lots of people come to this striking esplanade during evening hours to breathe fresh air, view sunset and watch the stunningly beautiful “Queens Necklace” at night.

Sunset at Bandra Bandstand Promenade

We went to Bandra Bandstand recently on a weekend after a long time. Bandstand is a regular hangout for couples, and like many seafronts in Mumbai it is crowded on a Sunday.

Bandstand, a kilometre long walkway along the sea, is normally associated with celebrities who reside in the area, the popular Shahrukh Khan's bungalow Mannat is facing the sea, and there are hordes of people waiting outside his bungalow, hoping to catch a glimpse of him.

We took some pictures of Bandstand and watched the sunset.

The promenade is revamped, which is always welcomed, we've (locals) had enough of those uneven paths. People enjoy taking a stroll, jogging or just sitting on chairs and looking at passer-bys.There were loads of people on the rocks, mostly couples, looking at the waves lashing against the shore, and looking at the beautiful sunset.While some were washing their clothes, there are also few slums on the shoreline.

Bandra Fort is located right at the end of road adjacent to Hotel Taj Land's End. We couldn't go there this time, but several music concerts take place in its open air theatre. Its a wonderful location to listen to music, look at the swaying palm trees and the Arabian sea as the backdrop.

Opposite that is Lover's Point, the name says it all. The cops make lot of money too by harrowing young couples.

In Mumbai sea fronts are generally cluttered with food stalls selling typical Mumbai delicacies, so to say. From pani puri to corn, sandwiches, ice-cream, etc., everything is available for families to enjoy their Sunday evening.My favorite wind wheels available for Rs 5.There is a small walkway from Bandstand which take you to the famous Mt Mary Church, which is on a hillock.

Cops round up 30 couples at Bandra Band Stand

Around 30 young couples at Bandra Band Stand had a harrowing time on Saturday night when they were rounded by the police and taken to the local police station.
According to eye-witnesses, eight couples sitting near the seaside promenade were rudely interrupted by two police officials at around 9 p.m.
"They were not sitting on the rocks which is a dangerous place in the night. None of them were misbehaving or were in compromising positions. But the police still rounded them up and took them to the police station," said an eye witness. The couples were booked for obscene behaviour in public places and released on a personal bond of Rs 1,200. Police officials were not available for comments.
Bandra resident and civic activist Kekoo Gandhi went to the police station after local residents came to him and complained about the highhandedness of the police. "When I went to the police station the senior inspector Kisan Shengal told me that he was acting on complaints by local residents about prostitution and young girls being led astray," Mr Gandhi said. According to Mr Shengal, the residents had complained when they saw two girls in school uniform there.
However, Mr Gandhi said the police had indiscriminately rounded up couples. One couple said they had just been married and were walking down the promenade arm-in-arm when the police swooped down on them.
Activists say cops have for long been meting out worse treatment to couples who come to Band Stand from places as far as Virar to snatch a few moments of privacy. Two years ago, the police had rounded up 40 persons, including couples. They were taken to the police station, made to wait for over two hours and let-off only after their names and adresses were jotted down. A few single men from the group were beaten and abused by policemen in the police station.
